    Foundation board slits?

Could someone tell me the purpose of these five slits?

Each is covered with a strip of fabric; each slit appears to be "open" at the bottom.

    Thanks.

Expansion joints. The old rubber cloth has to be replaced on them.

Thanks. Do they serve the same purpose as expansion joints on an asphalt road? Allow for expansion/contraction due to temperature?

Yes, the way this panel is made up, if not for them the wood would split in winter. When you glue the strips in, you should press some material down into the gap that they are covering so there is something to allow the gap to open.
