Theater Pipe Organ at a High School

    Hi all,

Some, maybe many, of you already know this. However, I just found out that Stephens High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia, USA has a Grande Page 4/22 theater pipe organ in its theater. This organ was originally installed at the WHT radio station in Chicago and later moved to the Michigan Theater in Flint, Michigan. For more information, see http://www.atosatlanta.org/stephenso...ande-page.html

I have not had the pleasure of hearing this instrument in person.

    Later,

I am in the ATOS group and have heard the Page several times. In general, it sounds better each year as the Atlanta group continues to improve it with tonal finishing and rebuilding. All of the chromatic percussions are now working. We had David Gray playing on 20 May 18 and he did some very impressive stuff that showed the non-trem'd capabilitites of the organ (Ride of the Valkyries).

The organ is in elevated chambers located in the rear of the school auditorium. The principal is a fan and was able to get some architectural changes made at the time the school was being built. Some of the students have been exposed to theater organ, or pipe organs in general, in a positive manner. Most everything in the console has been modernized and/or replaced.

The photo shows some of the console with Jay Mitchell, a past Atlanta Fox organist, who had just played a concert for ATOS, 21 Jan 18.
