    Your Favorite Hymnist

They can be from any era past or present, from any background. From St. Francis of Assisi to Martin Luther, to Robert Lowrey and even Beethoven and Mozart. Whether they wrote lyrics or tunes, or both, which would you choose?

First they came for the ABC consoles, then they came for the older consoles. When they finally got to the spinets, they were all gone.

Hammondlover.... I'm not much for the traditional hymn genre...   but my first thought to the word "hymn" was opera.... lol.... so go figure....    but I really like the vocalise sung by Sumi Jo  *coloratura soprano from South Korea* at the very end of the movie "The Ninth Gate" when the credits roll....  she has a beautiful voice....

The Ninth Gate was a rather boring film. Luckily you are full of surprises! Wink

    Re: Your Favorite Hymnist

As a practicing United Methodist, I would be committing heresy to not acknowledge Charles Wesley as the greatest writer of hymn lyrics ever--he wrote more than 6500 hymns, most of which had 6 or more verses, a feat not even approached by anyone else (to my knowledge).  Quite a few of his hymns are usually in lists of "favorite" hymns, too, so there must be some merit there.

For hymn tunes, I have several ideas:  (1) just about anything in the Welsh tune heritage; (2) William H. Doane (who set a lot of Fanny J. Crosby's words to music); George Frederick Handel; Hans Leo Hassler; and Lowell Mason all come to mind.

If I was one of those self styled Pentecostal Fundamentalist preachers who believed in tithing, my favourite hymnist would be Janis Joplin, who wrote "Lord, can't you buy me a Mercedes Benz. My friends all drive Porsches, I must make AYMEN....ds.
