I agree. On anything besides circuit boards, solder paste is a lifesaver. I use it a LOT, especially when joining stranded wire.
For years, I used a roll that I got from my grandpa and it was always sufficient without paste.
For small work I use a 30W iron. For larger work like stranded wire in cars I use a Weller gun. It's hotter than the iron but nowhere near a 100W gun I borrowed. Maybe 50W.
