    Reuter Opus 195 Theatre Organ

    well folks,

I have purchased Reuter opus 195, a 1926 Reuter Theatre organ built originally for a hotel in El Paso, Texas.

It is currently in use in a church in El Paso but they have decided to sell it, so in the coming month or two I will be moving a 2nd Reuter pipe organ!

It is a pretty simple and very small theatre organ, only 6 ranks or so, and indeed VERY similar to my Reuter 822 pipe organ...it does have a Tibia Clausa and a Vox Humana, as well as a celeste, but other than that is basically the same as the Reuter I already have.

It is playing now, so before it gets disconnected and moved I'll get some quick recordings made hopefully!

Reuter did make quite a few Theatre type organs for the Texas area back during this time, although I'm told by Reuter that most likely the wind pressure is probably about 5 inches, so who knows, maybe it will be more just a regular unit organ with some theater voices added, but should be interesting!

I thought you were going to wait until it was installed before you spilled the beans. []

Anyways, I can't wait to give it a whirl. =)*

lol, well the install date is up in the air as of yet...need to decide where it's going first

As of this writing I am pondering 4 options.

    1. Install the opus 195 as a "swell" division to the opus 822 (leaving the 822 all exposed and installing the opus 195 literally right behind the 822)..controlling both organs from the Holtkamp console downstairs.
Positive: would make a amazing home organ!
Big negative: would make my entire home basically an organ chamber.

    2. Install the opus 195 in my garage.
Positive: keeps the 195 historically intact
Negative: won't be as easy to access to play on a whim (the garage is about 500 feet from my house), not air conditioned, very short ceilings but some work arounds possible.

    3. Install the opus 195 in place of the 822, putting the 822 into the new church being built now to replace the original church it came from.
I'm not really sure the church would have ANY interest in having it back though at this time. I think over time they will want it back and that is my plan, but I think it's too early for that yet.
Positive: puts the 822 long term back where it has the best chance for long term survival. Negative: wow, lots of work! lol

    4. Put the 195 in storage until I add onto the house someday and have more room for it.

A big deciding factor will be how it sounds when I play it before taking it down.

well I live in a odd house, its a "aframe" style house that was popular back in the 1970's for a while (shaped like those modern A shaped churches)....I have LOTS of air space, thus the Reuter 822 does speak quite well in the space it is in and sounds awesome, but the amount of "living" space/i.e. floor space is severely limited....so if i install the 195 in the house with the 822 I will lose a bedroom and bathroom leaving me with only 2 bedrooms and one bathroom! Thus the garage option is being strongly considered.

    John,

Do you have kids at home? If not my3 cents opinion is add it to reuter 822 and make a bigger[] organ. However, I defintely understand the problem of getting space from a home when you are not the only person living there. My request for the livingroom coat closet for rectifier, bellows, and blower placement was lost so they are right next to the main organ case waiting me to build a case to hide them.

PS What do you use to record you organ? Since I'm thinking of doing the same thing.

well no kids, lol, i'm used to living in small apartments in NYC but in Indiana I think I want to keep some space around.

as noted, it really depends on how it sounds in person. If I REALLY go nuts for the sound it will go in the house, if its similar to what I already have plus a few oddball stops I'll probalby just put it in the garage....we shall see....

Recording: its complicated, in a nutshell: I basically use ProTools to record into a MBox USB recorder which records digitally direclty on my G4 mac laptop hard drive. BUT I use a mixer BEFORE the ProTools MBOX to adjust the individual mics (I record the organ up close and down stairs to get the pipe speech up close, and far away for the bass sounds, so I have to use a mixer for all the various mics)...then for reverb I use garageband after I record......

Having said all of that if i were starting over today I'd just record directly into garageband and skip all my steps I go thru, but organgrinder would know more about that than me, I just stick to what I am used to doing as it works for me.

Well, if you install 195 behind 822, you'd get Reuter 1017, well...sort of...[]. Even with the purchase of the 195, I somehow can't see you doing as Kelvin Smith in Utah has done/ is doing Installing what will ultimately be a 72 rank organ at home! At least he built a hall specifically for it. Nor do I see you doing as the Sanfilippos (5/80 Wurli). I guess one pipe organ and several electric/electronics weren't enough for you[] So Congrats on the latest addition to your collection.

Have you got any pictures? I'd love to see it.

72 ranks? not possible to get that in my house even if I gutted the kitchen and remaining bedrooms! lol

IF I put the 195 in it would be 11 or 12 ranks total I guess.

Even if I turned the house entirely over to the organ I could have max maybe 40 ranks..there is just not alot of space for doing any additional ranks as much as of course I would like to have them.

Well I've got one better than that. A very good friend here in Atlanta is about one half through installing 83 ranks in his home!! The home was designed and built for a pipe organ. The only problem is the original plans called for only about 35 ranks and as time went on he kept adding, and adding, and adding......you get the picture. All powered by two 5hp blowers, a new SSOS solid state system and commanded by a beautiful 4 manual Moller console that wasn't used 2 years before it was pulled and replaced. The entire great division is brand new pipe work.

I'll get him to give me the specs and I'll post 'em soon.
