I've been wanting to get the service playing certificate from the AGO for some time now. I don't know why because I don't need it ... but I want it anyways. Before I started learning all the music required for it I need to learn how to transpose a hymn on the fly.
Are there any good resources out there that you are aware of that would help me learn to transpose?

Your best bet is to talk to other AGO members who have the certificate. When I got mine (more years ago than I would like to admit too), I asked a couple of members in my chapter that had taken it and they were able to help out better than any printed material could.

You don't have to transpose it on the fly. You get to pick 2 hymns out of a booklet that has about 2 dozen hymns in it. Then you have to be able to transpose said hymns up to a full step either way. So basically you get to take as long as you want to learn it.
So even if you're talking about MEMORIZING all 8 different possibilities (hymn one up a half step, whole step, down a half step, whole step, etc. . . ) it's really not going to cost you too much time.
I used to have the booklet here in my office but it's gone now. I know one of the hymns is Azmon (Of for a thousand tongues to sing) which is only 16 bars long.

Scales... Learning scales helps you transpose better than anything else in the world.
But yes, ask other members who have gotten their certificate. They can help you out more than anything else.
