Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a 945 and 950. Obviously the 950 I believe is the newer of the two. Correct me if I'm wrong. Other than the sound palette and memory card - is there any differnce in the sound quality and/or acustical enhancement?

Hi,

The 950 is newer. The 945 was the first generation PDI that came out around 1991. The 950 is the second, came out around 1995 or 1996.

The basic sound between the two is going to be very similar. Same with the reverbs or whatever DSP stuff they add to the organs. Rodgers had an outboard reverb available for a while, which is what they integrated into the Trillium models around 2001.

The 950 is going to be more featured than the earlier model. But as a basic musical instrument they will be similar.

I remember that the 950 was a cheaper model than the 945. My guess is that they cheapened the construction. The 945 was rather expensive when it was introduced.

In any case, if you are struck on Rodgers, either one will do. I always recommend newer organs as support for them is usually more available. Believe me, long term support is not the big thing it used to be for manufacturers and distributors.

That is what I was interested in. I'm assuming Rodgers didn't really change much in the sound capability - but moreso in the "gadgets"....... ie: memory cards/user friendly options. If the sound processing is the same then I could or would forego a 950 and go with the earlier version to same some money. However, I don't want to jepordize the sound quality/clarity.

I believe the 950 is around 10 years older than the 945. The 950 was in production from 1981-1984 and does not feature Rodgers' Parallel Digital Imaging Technology. The 940 was probably in production in the early 90's and is equipped with MIDI (Phase III). The 950 is a larger console than the 940 if size would be an issue. The 940 will have more features as it is a newer model. There may be confusion with the 955 in the previous posts. I hope this helps. Completely different instruments .... the 950 is older and is an analog instrument (Canterbury 950) from '81-'84 .... the 945 is a PDI instrument (digital) of early vintage (mid 90s ..) ... sound of the two is totally different. The 945 was quite impressive as I remember and often was married with pipes in early combination instruments It also had MIDI implementation and was voiced via digital voicing tool (GC8 or GC10).

There may very well have been an analog organ that Rodgers made in the early 80s designated as model 950. If so, it was only made for a very short period of time.

Now Rodgers did make a digital PDI model 950, from the mid 90s till around year 2000. This model was made just prior to the Trillium models.

This is an example of confusion raised because Rodgers used the same model # for 2 radically different organs.

If you come to my house, I can take you to an install of a 950 PDI organ less than a km away. I heard the dedication recital on it by Hector Olivera in the late 90s. Organ sounded reasonable, a typical Rodgers type sound.

I also played a digital 950 in about 1998. Second-gen PDI, and these were the organs the Roland influence became more obvious.
