I would try it, as someone suggested, use a 8 drawbar and see where the crossover point is by ear starting at A440, others may and will differ, and it depends on which horn driver you use.........as you said others have done it and I have seen it too
just make sure you hook up the crossover properlyBTW ...I ran a 145 with an 8 ohm for years, it came that way and at the time I didn't know any better, ran another 147on an 8 ohm stereo amp...before I went to trade school and found I couldn't.
There must be a quick calculation out there but....................

Best to run a 16 ohm speaker in there. It won't hurt the amp but will mess with the balance and crossover frequency.
The amp should have a little more power when using a 16.
With an 8, I'd think that the XO would drop to 400 (as you now have twice the attenuation in the XO as you would have with a 16).
If it makes you feel any better, I think he's wrong.
