Leather, cork contracts under the pressure over time and does not expand.

Hello All-
I am building an EP, two-rank, unit windchest designed after OSI Unit Chest Style #2. Each end of the vinyl tubing will be inserted into a 'manifold' which is then screwed onto either the pouch board or the side wall. Should I use cork or felt as a gasket behind the manifold? I have read more about cork being used as a gasket material, but the existing (old) chests I have use a felt-like fabric. Which is best?
Also, should I use the same material around the bottom boards?
Thanks!
Ryan

you could use felt, leather or cork...each has their plusses and minuses. if you use felt, you need to use a very tightly woven felt, sometimes felt will not punch cleanly and screws can tend to grab the felt and tear it away from the bolster. Cork and leather are easier to punch, but cork, over time will adhere to both surfaces and sometimes it will not allow the joint to be separated cleanly, which may or may not cause later problems (sideways leakages). Leather is a good choice...available in several thicknesses, easy to punch and glue (use fish glue or hot hide glue for future restoration), separates easily, lasts forever.
