Technics SX-FN3 Expression Pedal Not Working

Hi all, Last week I picked up this FN3 and when I checked it out, the expression pedal was not responding. Nevertheless, I hauled it home ( it was the right price ) , figuring that it was probably a burned out / inoperative bulb in the pedal . It seems to be able to get full volume with the Master volume slider control all the way up, and pretty soft ( but still audible ) with it all the way down. So, I did some checking inside.

The bulb is not burned out. It looks bright enough for the size of the bulb to me. The shutter that controls the amount of light getting to the LDR is not out of adjustment or broken. Physically, the pedal assy is in fine shape.

I then took the ohmmeter to the LDR, with the board it is on unplugged. Here is what I find :

.09k, with a 60 watt incandescent trouble light close up to it.

2.44k, in the ambient shop lighting.

4.64k, with my finger covering it up.

So, it seems that it is responding to differing light levels, but I have no idea what one should read. Do these seem like normal readings ? Or could it still be bad ?

I don't have a service manual for this organ, so I'm asking if anyone might know about expression pedal problems with these. I know parts for these are hard / impossible to come by, but might some other LDR of the same dimensions be a possibility?

Any advice or help is appreciated.

Larry, you should be seeing a much greater difference is resistance. Seems like the LDR is bad. Yes, a sub will work if you can make it fit.

Thank you Geo ! I was hoping you would answer this one. I kinda thought that it might be bad as well, but not knowing the values I should be looking for it is hard to tell for sure. For testing purposes I'm thinking of getting a 5 pack assortment at Radio Shack ( I know, not the best place ) to see if there is one that may fit the hole in there. It's cheap enough at 3.69. Here is the link to the Spec Sheet for # 276-1657.

Might one of those be close enough ? Their site says my local store has them in stock. Would I possibly wreck anything else by trying one that may or may not be the correct Technics spec ?

Thank you for your help !

Sure, try it. You won't hurt anything. Likely any working LDR is better than a non-working one.

Thank you George !!! It is Fixed ! With your encouragement I went to our local Radio Shack and picked up the # 276-1657 five pack of Photocells, to see if any looked close to the one in the organ. Two of them were exact size matches for it. The package had no documentation with it, nor did any of the cells have an individual part # on them. So I took the ohmmeter and found the one of the two with the largest range and tried it.

And it works ! Just fine for the most part. The only thing is that the expression pedal makes the organ silent at full closed. But, it only takes a slight movement to get sound, and it responds well in the rest of the range. So it may not be the EXACT spec as the one Technics used, but close enough to use. Of course I don't know if Technics perhaps designed the pedal shutter slot to make the organ silent at full closed, maybe they did.

Now I have a nice fully functional Technics SX-FN3, that I don't have any particular need for. Perhaps I will try to sell ( Yeah Right ! ) it. With it's pretty complete MIDI implementation, it would make a fine MIDI master controller .

    Larry,

You can simply added a resistor in series with the photocell (or parallel depending on how the decoder is reading the photocell resistance) so the organ won't be full silent when the expression pedal is at minimum low. Personally, I never get near full low, as I've been told I always play loud! LOL

    Joe
