    860 Leslie under reno

Finally clear enough space in the garage for the Leslie lab to go back into service, been almost a year.
I pulled the 860 apart as the lower rotor wouldn't work right. The lower motor was jammed up and ate the o ring on the big motor and brown gook coming out of the journal of the small motor, I hope it is not burnt out, good thing I have spares. The amp was very low output and distorted so I hope it is only connections.
I thought the motor problem was the relay board as I have had these go in the past.

    Invert your small motor bolts

inverted bolts and stand.jpglooks like someone greased the motor rather than adjusting it, i have never seen one so out of whack, I just reversed both lower motor stators as I don't like Leslie rotors turning the same way: as the 860 does, got it down to about an hour for a full clean, flush, relub, stator flip and reassemble.
As noted before in past posts but I will mention it for the newbies, when you remove the small motor for maintenance, reverse the two bolts holding it together 180* ONE at a TIME and it will make future service way.....way........easier...the motor can then be disassembled by just removing the nuts.
Came up with an ideal test bench for the motor......just have to find an old power cord to mangle, why does every ss Leslie need to use different connector plugs on the motors?
lab 2.jpgnote the homemade upper driver (8ohm 20 watt) since i blew up the V-21, fine for a 125 or 130 mod for now but I will order a new diaphragm eventually, anyone nearby need single speed motors (sans pulleys of course)

turns out the Model 51 motors have those slide one pinch style plugs, add a length of 16 g speaker wire and perfect motor test lead, operation repair/reverse and service lower motor complete........not many hours on this Leslie.....stored for years from the look of it

Interested in this thread. I'd like to have some drawings or dimensions of an 860 to build one. How do you reverse the motor stators, is it difficult? I've got plenty of spare units to try it out on. Dave.

you start with a clean tidy work area, dismantle the motors noting where each spacer goes and not losing the snap ans c ring off the large motor shaft. Invert the windings 180* (the wiry parts) on both motors, flush oil pads, lub, reassemble and adjust out of the Leslie.
Test and install, search my posts as i did astep by step at one point.

    Bummer 860 issues

so I installed the lower motor, hooked up the preamp and slow works great, high seems to energize both motors and stalls them out, the rotors now turn opposite at least.
Looks like something is amiss with the switching board, one of those SCR things or something........done for the night but any ideas???
I tested with 2 different cables, my 7830 kit and my combo preamp so it is down to the leslie itself.
Weird stuff with using stop and/or fast/slow switches so I think it is a board issue, hard to see the lower motor but the top is definitely engaging both motors on fast

Joe. Have a look at the posts I made on the HL722 thread. I've had nightmares with the SCR/triac thing in the past. If you get them changed and get it working correctly then you should be good for another 30 years. I've had this on three 760/825 power chassis. The only ones that work are the ones with new triacs. On the 9 pin family, the SCRs were used on the early models (a group of four) and then on the later ones they had two triacs. I don't know the 860 but on the 9 pin Leslies you can upgrade the board from SCRs to triacs.

    Cheers

    Dave

Funny, both threads were back to back this morning.......so the SCR's will bleed power to both circuits?
I have a 9 pin 710 chassis somewhere, the board should be the same? I can pull the board from my 130 also, I haven't had time to compare yet?
Sorry, type Yoda like did I.

Yes 710 Power chassis is the same. I should have included it. It is the same as 760 and 825 although the 825 one has a missing power plug for the second amplifier but it is the same board with solder holes for the second plug. I had the same problem with one of them too!

just to clarify, are we talking the motor control relay board or the power supply board for an 11 pin 860, I think I will use the 130 chassis and amp for easy testing just to the woofer, I know the motor control board is good on that as i repaired it when i got it.
I can test one motor at a time as I am not sure about current on the 130?
