I bought an unfinished birchwood stand for my Hammond XK3c a while back and used Zar oil based wood stain. I mixed a 50/50 blend of #116 Cherry and #118 Dark Mahogany. Turned out great.
Has anyone come up with a stain mix that approximates the 60's era Red Walnut finish. ?
Thanks

I should note that I will be applying this to black walnut so I am starting from the same wood base as Hammond.
I have had luck using Minwax brand...mostly because it is readily available.
I mix dark walnut and red mahagony and get something really close. You will have to experiment with ratios, but I would start with 50/50.
Using a light walnut instead of the dark is also an option, depending on the results desired.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.
In reality, there is.

I will try both combinations - I picked up about 100 sq ft of black walnut veneer so i can cut pieces to experiment with. Still looking for the solid walnut boards I need.
