Model 'A' serial number question....

I've read that only 2,500 model 'A' Hammond organs were produced. This morning a Model 'A' showed up on ebay with a serial number of 2663.....

I remember reading in Scott Faragher's "The Hammond Book" that Hammond sometimes used non-sequential serial numbers so that his competitors would not know how many organs he was selling.

Can someone help me resolve this mystery?

Also, anyone care to guess (speculate) about how many Model 'A' Hammonds might still be out there?

The pre-2500 "A" seies are easy to identify from a picture. The music rack was mounted to the underside of the cover lid, and folded lengthwise. The case was narrower so that the pedal switch box was flush with the back legs. They switched to the wider, more familiar "B" style case after the 2500 figure. At that time, serial numbers were more predictable and consistent, and had not taken on the esoteric qualities of later eras.

That's actually an AB, only 2 numbers away from mine. They still have the A serial plate though.
