"96 Tears" by ? and the Mysterians

    Hi all,

Just started playing, as some of you know. I've already learned a tune, "96 Tears," but I'm not sure I've got the bridge right. If you watch this video on YouTube, it's the part that goes from about 1:19-1:46. It sounds like the organ player is just kind of vamping on one cord, and there's a another chord before it goes back to the main riff. Does anyone know how to play this part (who will admit to it )

IF you do, or if you have some sheet music, please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Aaron

Played in a band called the Menthol Kings out of Newport, RI. They did all those tunes.
I believe it vamps on e minor for 13 bars followed by a C chord.
Then there is 3 bar intro into the last verse with two G chords back to back (instead of the expected 4 bar phrase.)
Currently doing a Doors Tribute so I have lots of Doors cheat sheets.

96 Tears is a classic organ song, no shame there, great one to start on, try Evil Ways by Santana .....only three chords in the main part and you will feel like a rocker...lol Gm, C D
1956 M3, 130 custom leslie, 51 Leslie, 860 Leslie with Preamp, S08 Yamaha and K2000S, Young Chang 85 key spinet and Korg SV-1 73 less Hammonds, downsized they found a good home

Yeah, but the solo will take awhile to learn! Thanks!

Thanks for the notes! Much appreciated.

I have a question about the song, though. What was your left hand doing? Obviously, if you had a bass player, you didn't have to play the bass line. But did you throw in a few bass notes here and there?

Okay, I have a couple of requests: "Soul Kitchen" and "Light My Fire."

Also, if anybody has "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," I'd love to get a copy of the chart.

    Thanks!

Nope. The band had two guitar players and a bass player. The less clutter the better.

I'll try to post the Doors charts tomorrow.
The opening to "In The Garden of Eden" is just a d minor arpeggio. I learned that by ear when I was a kid. It would be interesting to go back and see how much I got wrong (or not)

If you need a copy of Light My Fire (original audio) pitch corrected let me know (alto.sax@verizon.net).
I think they slowed it down to make it easier for Jim to hit the notes and then forgot to speed it back up when they mixed it down to stereo for mastering.
Whatever the cause the original album recording is almost a half step flat.

The "run" at the beginning of In... is just a d minor arpeggio (ie nothing but the notes D-F-A-D).
You start on D and finally come to rest on an A and hold on to the A with your pinkie while you do that little run underneath.
For fingering either use 1-2-3-5 or 1-2-4-5, whichever is more comfortable.
(Properly you should use 1-2-3-5 for D-F-A-D and A-D-F-A
    and 1-2-4-5 for F-A-D-F but who's watching?).
Start on D with your 3 or 4 finger and then play the F below that with your thumb.
So D(3) F(1) A(2) D(3) F(5) shift your thumb up to A while you finish the first arpeggio
    A(1) D(2) F(3) A(5) shift thumb to D
    D(1) F(2) A(3) D(5) shift thumb to F
..... until you reach high A

    sfp,

Thanks very much for the charts and the insights on "In-A-Gadda"! Really appreciate it. Last night, I started working on the intro to "Light My Fire." For me, the hardest part is that C-to-F stretch in the second measure of the intro. I'm having trouble hitting it consistently. Practice, practice, practice, right? The good news for me is that the intro is almost like an exercise for the right hand. It requires you to shift hand positions, and you really need to use the proper fingering to get it right. Good stuff.
