I too just aquired a C2 and to my amazement had a buttload of Hammond hair in it compared to all the Hammonds that I owned...which has got to be 20-30 over the last 40 years. I wonder if its more common in the 2 series??
I just had to share this.
I am working on a C2 that I recently acquired. Upon disassembly, I found it to have a most impressive collection of dendrite growth inside. I created a video/slide show and posted it on my YouTube page:

So, if you are fortunate to have never seen this phenomenon, you can see what all the talk is about. If you wondered what the purpose of "zapping" was, and why it works, this will enlighten you.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.
In reality, there is.

Good Video by the way!

Most non-detergent oils have zinc as a rust inhibitor. For example, spindle oil, transmission fluid, hydraulic fluid, air tool oil. With the various sources of "hammond" oil on the internet etc after Hammond crashed, certain technical people before the MSDS came out may have been using this. Some sellers may still be selling it. Not Suzuki, but a user in Canada that has an actual local Hammond/Suzuki dealer is paying $10 per oz for the "real" stuff. I'm using mineral oil for laxative purposes from the grocery store in my tone generator now. Has tocopherol in it as an addtitive, that is Vitamin E. An oil alcohol. seems safe to me. Mcmaster.com has food grade oil in gallons without zinc. Automotive engine oil has long contained metals in it even more exotic than zinc as bearing treatment.

This was interesting. Since I seldom look inside my cabinet. This may save me some repair money.
Mineral oil, Jo?
Yeah, comes in white bottles just like isoprophyl alcohol and witch hazel. Down the aisle next to the ex-lax. Nothing but oil and tocopherol. I used Type F no-detergent auto transmission fluid last year (new Meier, not used, the Coastal type F at Autoz*** smells like burned factory hydraulic fluid), but Type F might have zinc in it. No telling, since it is a consumer commodity, there is no MSDS. Zinc might make dendrites when the oil evaporates. The big smear review of H100's that google comes up with the guy recommended spindle oil, which is great in all respects except mcmaster says theirs has zinc in it. Turbine oil is even more refined, but again turbines have a water on the bearing problem, so it probably has zinc in it.

Here's a good read : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whisker_(metallurgy)
I'm sure not going to use vegetable oil, which is the alternative. Whale oil is always good, used for clocks. My grandfather didn't will me any.
You should check any oil for wax by baking a bit in a stainless steel cup for 400 deg for 6 hours or so.
Of course, you should completely trust the wizard behind the green curtain selling "hammond" oil on E-bay.
