    The Lutheran service book (Hymnal)

The Lutheran service book ( of the Lutheran church, ms,) in which i am organist, contains the Hymn; "For all the Saints"
#677. I have played it on Sunday and also many times before, both from the new version hymnal and also from the old
"Red" hymnal. Now i would like to comment on this particuler arrangement. First of all it begains with a kind of "walking'
base style in the left hand and it holds that pretty much the same all the way to the third stanza down at the first measure, it gives you a real small "G'' if you desire to play the little "Gs" and do the bigger notes in the pedal. Then a
right hand "chord'' and also a left handed one, and pedals. Cannot stand that arrangement no how! To me its half piano
half organ playing, more piano then organ. On the other the hand, the old "Red " hymnal had the good arrangement
of this hymn, S.A.T.B. Much BETTER! Makes for better organ playing. If any of you would do me a faver and check into
your hymnals just to see what the arrangement is like, I do know that the U.M. church hymnal carries the same arrangement as the one i play from.

Hi! I'm a LCMS organist too... I also dread this hymn when it comes up. I thought the arrangement in LW was difficult, but I see they muddied it up even more in LSB. I like that LSB (burgandy) went back to the classic wording of the stanza's of most of the hymns. But in their attempt to make the hymns more piano friendly I'm sure they have a lot of organists ripping their hair out. I've found myself running the train off the tracks in some of the old standards where they have changed the tenor and bass lines. Guess we just gotta adapt and change instead of being stuck in our old comfortable ways. Lots of times, if I like an arrangement in one of the books I'll play that arrangement instead of the one in the current hymnal. I'm looking forward to Easter sunday so we can put "dirge" season (Lent)behind us. lol
