View Full Version : Just a little more air......

Is there some way to add a little more air to my little 1/3 hpblower? It's in a static resevoir box, the original from 1935. I added the low octave of gedackts to my Wicks 3R "Sonatina". They areon their own chestand they are winded from the unit chest, from where the free reeds took air, with a 2 1/2" flex hose. I disconnected thefree reeds. The lowest 3 notes barely get enough air to speak. I disconnected the tremolo setup at the resevoir, no difference. Can I use the tremolo out port on the resevoir as an 'in' port with a little blower? I wasn't planning on a new blower and resevoir at this point, due to the cost. I'd sure appreciate any ideas.

Thanks,

Hi Jesse,

I don't remember if you posted a picture of the static reservoir or not but if it has a floating lid you can try adding some more weight to the top of the lid. This will increase the psi to the chests.

What is the scale of the 16' octave? 2 1/2" may not be enough. *Also, check the pressure and the butterfly valves (if so equipped) for the rank. *Don't use the trem port as an 'in' port. *Put the blower on the unregulated side of the curtain valve.

Hi Don, what's a floating lid? It has a tight fitting lid, which I felted inside to silence the motor; but it's in there pretty tight. I'll go do that now anyway. Thanks,

I tightened that long screw in the box down. It stops the cloth bellows like thing from moving more open. I think it made a little difference.

It's hard to tell from the picture but it looks like a bellows of some sort in the blower box. Can you push down on the bellows? That would create more wind pressure coming out of the reservoir. Also like Trevor suggested, check on the big woods and see what position the toe hole valves are in. You might can open the valves under each pipe toe to allow more wind in the pipes. Open the just a little amount at a time.

Jesse,

I can't tell for sure but on the three pipe laying on the floor, do I see sliders under the blocks where the wind line are attached to the toe of the pipes?

If so you can pull those slides out some to allow more wind to the pipe. Can you take a picture of the bottom of the other wood flutes where they sit in the chest?

a few more pics: Also I twisted the feet and got less hiss here and there; do you think the 2.5" wind line from the unit chest (below) should come up thru the rack or does that pipe make a good turn without too much cinching? I noticed the motor is 1/4 hp, not 1/3. I have a spencer orgerblo, 1/3 hp, from a reed organ, with a newer Balfour motor; but I need to figure out how to change it to pressure on my workbench. Is it possible to make a resevoir for say a 2nd blower for that offchest? I think where these pipes came from must have had higher wind pressure, if the chest has such a small hole in it, and was daisychained. I think my wind is between 2.5 and 3.5". Thanks Don.

Jesse

oh, and are those screws near the top of the chest the valves? I did just remove the metal sliders from the 3 pipes on the floor. They had been full open.

Well, after working on the organ for several hours, the blower in a box, etc.it's much better. I played it for 2 hours straight and was very happy with the result. I'm gonna have to get a new blower one day, got a quote from White for around $3500 for 1.5 hp, box and muffler; looked on the forum here Koalas and home made cement board boxes for around 1/10 of that and am just mulling it over. It's good enough for now. The Bach E minor prelude, The Cathedral, with all those abrupt chords and big sound sounds pretty good on that little Wicks. The bass extension pipes give it more boom on the bottom and that makes the organ sound bigger and better.

Hi Jesse, I use a Koala blower that has a static pressure of 6.25". This supplies 5"wp to the resevoir and pipe work located upstairs. I have a 45sc ViolinDiapason 73 notes 8-4, 97 note bourdon 16-2, Vox Humana 8, and will be installing a Large scale 16' subbass of 32 notes as well as a saliconical. I have the koala about 15 feet from resevoir with a wood box lined with foam between the two to help stop the transmission of any blower noise to the pipe work. The blower was about 120 or 180 bucks I think. I also have a standard organ blower with a 1/2 hp motor which i believe has a static pressure of 5-6" have not measured it. Which will wind the subbass and swell shades. I would definetly consider the koala blower instead of the 3500.00 one.

Jesse, I did install the opus two myself. It was not overly difficult and it is extremely flexible. Dave Milton (Owner) will send the initial config file, set to your specifications and directions and examples on how to modify it as needed. I have the hall effect keyboard sensors which uses magnets and sealed sensorsto open and close the key contacts, and can send velocity information if you want. Also the implementation into your system would be simpler then mine since you do not currently use midi. Initially midi is all I used with no pipe ranks, so there was some tweaking of the system as we went along. Overall I am very happy with the system, and support from Dave.

Also the foam i refer to is the kind used for cushions/furniture, it is not installed in the blower box but in the airline (before the curtainvalve. I am going to be building a box for the blower and will line it with foam and backer board to reduce the noise.
