<u>**What movies can we spot an organ in?**</u>
I'll start.
The 1960's classic film "The ghost and Mr. Chicken" has an organ as part of the plot. The console itself looks almost to be a Reuter.
I'm interested to see what other films have organs in them (even if its just in the score).

Don't know if it qualifies, but there is the organ of Captain Nemo in "20000 leagues under the sea" (1954?)
While googling for the date of Nemo, I came accross this page: http://theatreorgans.com/movies.htm Would that be sufficient.
Edit: that page lists "Help"...

Greetings,
There are fakish residence organs played in Sunset Boulevard and Fog Island; the latter with a secret facade door that opens to a secret passage to the basement! The former is just hilarious.
The original House on haunted Hill with Vincent Price has a reed organ that plays it self to the sound of a Hammond - hilarious!

Last nite I watched "Back to the Future III" and saw Doc Brown sit on his harmonium when startled by Marty. It was amazing how he could play such chord progressions, and how the harmonium sounded so un-harmonium-like!

1980's or early 1990's British Rock Band flick...
a really nice spot of a real pipe organ,
the scene: a young musician is at the console of a pipe organ in a large chuch (not a cathedral I don't think) somewhere in Britain, playing Bach.....
as he plays, in walks a friend who comes up to the console and remarks how much it sounds like
Whiter Shade of Pale... the organists morphs the Bach into Whiter Shade...
A priest walks down the isle below (the organ is up in a choir loft)... the priest remarks that he doesn't know what the words to the song are either, or what the "vestal virgins" are all about...
hazy memory so I'm sure the scene was a bit different than I remember now but that scene was quite nice..
it was a movie about a rock band, but I can't think of the name. One of the songs they sang was MUSTANG SALLY. Gritty British rock band movie.
name of the movie anyone? I think it was "THE ________" (band name?)
EDIT:
movie name: THE COMMITMENTS

Oh, just remembered one.
In National Treasure (another recent movie), when they finally arrive at Trinity (church? cathedral?) on Wall Street in NY, there's a nice shot of the organ on the back wall...

In National Treasure, the organ you actually see is the Schlicker in the balcony of First Congregational Church, LA. I suppose it was easier to film the inside shots in hollywood rather than in NY.
The last years comedy Just Friends has a shot of an unidentified organ being played for a children's bible school class.
There is also a theatre organ being played in Spiderman.

There a real ZOWIE Plexiglas and neon organ thing in Vincent Price's Dr. Phibes movies. I almost barfed as Price played. He, more or less, massaged the keys rather than played them. Yuck.
There was also an awful film that seemed to be a cheap ripoff of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". A British actor played the part of the French guy and he sat and played one of the neatest and gaudiest theater organs you could imagine. It was humorous, and it really sticks in my mind. I only ever saw it once on TV.
Then there is the organ that must have been made with heavy gauge steel pipes. Some superhero movie. "Daredevil" maybe? They really trash the organ using metal pipes that don't bend easily as clubs. I didn't care for that vandalism at all.

There was at TV movie made sometime during the '80s (maybe someone else out there remembers it and can help out with the name) about a church whose pipe organ konked out right before Christmas and the congregation all pitched in to fix it and get it going. Anyone else out there remember this one?

One of the Pink Panther movies, where Chief Inspector Dreyfus is at some castle in Europe, and everyone is trying to kill Clouseau. This is the one where Clouseau has that great dialog while asking for "a zimmer: a rrrrrrhhhhooooooooom!":
"Does your dog bite?"
He reached down to pet the dog, dog bites him, and he continues with:
"I thought you said your dog does not bite!"
To which the desk clerk replies:
"That... is not my dog!" (cuckoo clock goes off in background).

Mike,
If I remember correctly, the movie you are referring to is "A Christmas Without Snow." The movie was produced by CBS and aired in the United States in 1980. The movie starred Michael Learned, who is most famous for playing Olivia Walton on "The Waltons."

The Buddy Holly Story, A Good Friend and Organist is Dominic Cangelosi playing a Hammond B3, Opening Scene of the moving at the Roller Skating Rink.
There's a Hockey Movie with three brothers named the "Hansen Brothers" not sure what the name of the movie is however, they shoot the puck and it goes all over the arena and hits the organist in the head and knocks him off the bench of what appears to be a Hammond B3.
Lest we not forget Phantom of the Opera.

"That 70's Show" which is a very popular sitcom series in North America - they have an unusual home organ in their living room - it is a regular spinet with two keyboards but also has the chord buttons on the left hand side - it is either a Wurlitzer or Lowrey...
I wish the "Simpsons" would do an episode with Bart or Lisa learning the organ - they could have some fun with that... and maybe it would boost the idea of an electronic organ as a great home entertainment item once again.
"Message of Love - the Isle of Wight Festival" shows Keith Emerson playing a Hammond L series backwards (i.e. he is standing BEHIND the organ as he plays!)... also shows a rather rare Mellotron being played by the Moody Blues... plus the Doors organ is heard but not seen.

The only 2-manual spinet I can remember ever seeing with chord-buttons was... a MAGNUS! Sounded just like those cheap toy chord organs that I'm sure many of you had as kids... In other words, AWFUL!
I've only seen one of these, at a relative's home, wayyy back in the early 70's. I played the thing, and there was no hope of sounding any good on it.
It had an expression pedal, but no bass pedals for the feet to play.
Okay, back to your regularly scheduled thread...

Hi all,
Last night in the television show "CSI" (aired in the US), there were a couple of shots of an organ in the background of a crime scence. They were too quick and too far away for me to try to determine the make and/or model.
Also, in the old tv show "Full House," there was an organ in the corner. To my knowledge it was never played.
Also, I believe Wurlitzer did make organs with two keyboards, a pedalboard, and chord buttons. I think this was an effort to sell organs to accordionaist. (I also play a little accordion.) I have never played or seen one of these in person, only on e-bay.

There was an episode of "Touched By an Angel" where Della Reese is sitting at the console of what looks like a three manual Allen. I think this is the same episode that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir appeared in. In the comedy "Mafia", there is a great shot of the EM Skinner chancel organ in First Congregational in Los Angeles. It's actually being played too. There are also glimpses of the Schlicker in the gallery. In "Steel Magnolias" during Shelby's wedding, there is a shot of the organist playing what looks like a Yamaha organ. Sounds like one too. In "In and Out" we hear what sounds like a pipe organ being played during the wedding processional, but see an old lady sitting at the console of a spinet organ that you know is NOT being played. I hate when they do that in the movies. Get a real organist to play the real organ in the church!

There was a 50's/60's Disney cartoon where minnie gives mickey an organ for his birthday... (may have been even earlier)
There was a movie that came out also from Disney revolving around an evil pipe organ (or at least had an evil pipe organ as a major character). I think it was a lower-cost movie so was not as widespread. Either way, I can't imagine this would a lot of positive publicity for the organ... Kids getting nightmares about the "big scarry 'piano'" and all!
I was also flipping channels one day and Will & Grace was on. Although I'm not a fan of this show, I watched a few minutes after I saw a shot of an organ. Although just a background prop, there was a spinet organ at the Catholic school the scene was taking place.

In the Laurel & Hardy classic Swiss Miss the boys accidentally dump a bucket of soapy water into the pipe organ. When it is played, it blows bubbles, with each note sounding only when its bubble bursts. :)
Number 2 has an organ in his lair on The Prisoner, the '60's cult classic. It's seen and played in several episodes.

I beleive that movie was titled "A CHRISTMAS WITHOUT SNOW". About an organist/choir
director and the organ problems that ensued. He got stuck with a toaster theatre type organ
in which he could not stand the sound of in comparison with his beloved Pipe Organ.
Once the pipe organ was repaired he was once again in his glory, and lived happily ever
after.
Cannot say that i blamed him, that toaster organ did not even resemble the theatre organ
sound, if it did, that would'nt have been bad.

Somebody mentioned Ethel Smith a few posts ago. Remember her in "Melody Time" from Disney? That was a series of musical shorts, better known for having "Pecos Bill" in it. She is playing a samba on a BC with some hammond speaker to cheer up D. Duck and a parrot, with a mischevous red Braz(s)ilian bird as an MC, who blows up the organ at the end. I have seen it on DVD: it is worth looking at again.

"Johnny Dangerously" near the end of the movie, a couple of guys are fighting, and fall down on top of an organ console in a theatre.
"Angel in my Pocket": Andy Griffith plays a preacher. His church's reed organ is on it's last leg, and he asks a local theatre to donate the pipe organ. Pretty funny scene, as the theatre has turned to striptease acts, and while auditioning, one of the girls wants the preacher to play some music. He does. Of course some members of his congregation happen to have followed him into the theatre, and see what's going on, and infer the worst.
Toodles.

"Nightmare on the 13th Floor" . Starred Louise Fletcher and James Brolin among others. There's one scene in which the main character, a reporter investigating a mysterious hotel, stops in a church to discuss something with the priest. You can hear the organ, and when you see it, it's obviously a fairly modern tracker. What makes it so funny is two things- First, the priest is up on a ladder "tuning" the organ (like he's qualified to do that! yeah....), and second, he's tuning it with a piano tuning wrench, and placing the wrench at the toe of a facade pipe to "tune" it. I bust a gut every time this one comes on TV!

Recently I came across this gem:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072869
It was on AMC this a while back. It features a mouth-less organ facade with impossibly curved keyboards used as part of what is presented as a Satanic ritual. It's about 1/3rd of the way into the film, which also has ham-tastic performances from William Shatner and Ernest Borgnine. John Travolta (!) is in it as well. I have a dim recollection of a B & W movie, probably seen on TV, set in occupied Holland (I think) during the 2nd World War. The scene was some kind of service in a church, and then some occupying soldiers or officers came in. The organist played the melody of the national anthem defiantly (I assume it was the anthem), and used only his feet. There was a camera shot of this.</P>

I went to see DaVinche Code this week while I was in Scotland. Then I went over to see Rosylyn Chapel (for the record, I don't believe Dan Brown's fictional story). Anyways ... there's an organ in the chapel and it appears the chapel is still active as it was noted on the wall that it does still have a priest assigned to it. I didn't catch it in the movie since I wasn't looking for it ... but I'll bet the organ is in there. It's on the end up in a balcony ... not very big. It's on the end opposite of where Tom Hanks walks down into the lower level of the chapel.</P>
</P>
And just for the record ... the floor was completely exposed and there was no trap door in the floor leading to the holy grail like the movie showed. I'd guess they made up that part of the set. :O)</P>

Hi</P>
Everyone!</P>
I have not read all the posts on this thread, so If I repeat any that have been said, I apologize.</P>
afuller5 (/members/afuller5.aspx) , (ALLEN) you mentioned Tv's "full house" --that was a Schaffer & Sons digital organ and their was an episode where John Stamos character played it. (and it sounded like he was really playing it) </P>
AS far as other TV organs, you have the Munster's from the 60s- Herman played the organ and The aadams family (Lurch played the harpsichord and organ) obviously those were not real organs , they were studio dummies with dubbed in music.</P>
An episode of the Jeffersons' where Bentley played an organ (for some reason it was being temporarily stored in the jeffersons' apt.) They did'nt show the front of the console, just the rear. But the sound coming out of it was a hammond (probably dubbed, I'm sure!)</P>
The 80's sitcom "AMEN" on NBC , often had a hammond b-3 and leslie set up (in the church)</P>
An Episode of the 80's sitcom "227" had a church choir scene with a hammond b-3/leslie setup.</P>
An Episode of "the Parkers" , a church scene where a hammond of some sort is being used during the preachers sermon and then again for a duet with one of the main characters. Beatiful gospel music in this episode, LOVED IT></P>
An Episode of "Andy Griffith", where the churchis trying to raise money to buy a new organ. The organ console is a hammond, but when they played it, I couldn't determine if it was really a hammond sound. But it was an interesting episode.</P>
An Episode of "the odd couple" one of them is playing a hammond b-3 with leslie in a radio studio for a live broadcast.</P>
MOVIES:</P>
>Edward Scissorhands---Esmerelda the crazy , Fudie Christian organ lady of the neighborhood.</P>
2 great scenes of her actully playing a Hammond spinet T series organ. </P>
>Sister Act. Showed pipe organ console in the cathedral and later in the movie a Leslie speaker was shown in the background in the choir "rehearsal room". </P>
>Harper Valley PTA---big pipe organ shown and played by a nun (a character in the movie was kidnapped and changed up to a pipe chest in the organ chamber room.! </P>
>Steel Magnolias---when shelby gets married, their is a close up of the organist playing what looks like to a TECHNICS or Yamaha or schaffer & sons late 80's digital spinet organ. (I think the organistis really playing it!?)</P>
>FLOWERS in the attic--wedding scene, there is an organ, but I cannot tell what kind and the music being played sounds very pipe-ish. They never show a close-up of the organ, but it almost looks like a one-manual with 2 pedals (like a reed organ).</P>
</P>
Thats all I can think of now. I will probably come up with more as I remember.</P>
take care!</P>

There is a comedy spoof of James Bond called 'Spy Hard'. The character who is the equivalent of James ends up dressed as a nun trying to conduct their choir who are singing solo, but then when they all suddenly stop, there is a shot of an organist playing a two manual instrument turning round. They later sing a jazzy song with no sounds of any type of organ, and there are some more shots of the organist playing.

In this year's series of Doctor Who (im sad i know!) The doctor played an organ to save the world. THey said it was Southwark but they were lying coz it was actually filmed in Wells cathedral!

In the Fellini film "La Dolce Vita" there is a scene where Marcello Mastroianni is talking to his friend who is playing a pipe organ. I don't remember what he was playing but it might've been the Bach T&F (of course).

My brother watches anime (Japanese cartoons) quite a bit. I find them incredibly strange and don't watch them). One show he was watching (I don't know the name) the antagonist had rigged a pipe organ to produce ultra-low frequency sounds which were inaudible to the human ear, but could cause earthquakes and destroy towns. </P>
(Yes, it was quite strange).</P>

I'm not sure if it was mentioned, but here goes:</p>
- The show, "Rosemary and Thyme" on PBS had an episode where the organist is found to be the killer. At some point you even see the organ as it was a major plot point in the "how he did it" factor. </p>
- In "Blues Brothers" The are several scenes depicting a Hammond being played in the band and in the famous gospel scene where Jake decides that they are "on a mission from God".</p>

Funny you should bring up La Dolce Vita, though. I watched 8 1/2 just yesterday.**</p>
Knowing Fellini, he would have probably made him play carnival tunes! [:D]</p>

* *There's a gallery organ in several shots of Short Circuit 2 where "Johnny Five" goes to the confessional!<div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>* *Also, there's an organ in the gallery of the retired Church building in "Hard Rain" which winds up taking several bullets to the manuals towards the end of the movie making it play - it looked almost like a Moller artiste console if memory serves.<div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>** ** *- Nate</div></div>

At the end of the movie "Amazing grace" (more recent film, didn't get enough appreciation and publicity) the main character gets married in a little chapel (looked to be an English chapel of some sort). The organ is playing Jesu, joy of man's desiring, if I remember correctly. You can't see it, but I could have sworn the player slowed down by accident.

I have seen in the commercial and trailor for the newly released film 'License to Wed' that for a brief moment, the vicar is standing in front of a console of what looks like a HUGE organ! Does anyone know where it is or if it is real?</P>

Oh, just remembered one.
In National Treasure (another recent movie), when they finally arrive at Trinity (church? cathedral?) on Wall Street in NY, there's a nice shot of the organ on the back wall...</P>
I remember seeing that and wondering if it is the same Trinity Wall Street church that has been the subject of so many posts here. I seem to remember seeing a street sign saying "Wall Street".</P>
A pipe organ appears late in the movie "The Great Race".</P>
