Where is the world's finest 32' reed?

    Where do you think?

My thoughts are on either Notre-Dame in Paris, or maybe Sydney Town Hall - and I'm talking about 32' reed not the 64'!

I suppose we could also do this sort of post for things like chamades and tubas.....

You need to tell us what you mean by "finest".

Gee, I'm asking for a lot of definitions on the Forum today.  Hmm

Anyway... loud doesn't always equate to best.

A 32' reed by itself is nothing to enjoy, really; it needs the rest of the organ to be in proper context.  So, a fine 32' reed would need to have a very fine instrument to go along with it ... and the proper acoustics too.

the 32' bombarde at St. Mary the Virgin in NYC about knocks you off the console when you play it.....(the console is literally right below the pipes).....

The funny part is the Crescendo pedal is rigged up to bring the 32' pedal stop on first. (i.e. makes the crescendo pedal useless other than determining when visiting organists chance upon the pedal).

St. Mary's has an SSL system with four crescendo settings.  I seem to recall that "std" was a bit peculiar, so I opted for another setting.

That crescendo anomaly would be very easy to fix, but I wouldn't dare do it without asking permission.  I have a feeling the organist is having a bit of fun with visitors.  Smile
