Personally, there are very few hymns that peeve me, only certain ones that get sung over and over and over and over and over and over and over. Certain people, whenever requests for hymns are taken, will always request one out of 5 different songs in the hymnal. Please, there are 600+ hymns in the book, we don't need to sing 5 95% of the time. One other thing: the PCUSA and the ELW hymnals seem to have dislodged some traditional hymns/songs in favor of praise choruses or ethnic foreign-language hymns. Also the PCUSA grinds on me because of the constant changes to text to make the hymns "culturally appropriate." How about educating people so they can get the benefit of hymns, instead of destroying what the church has held dear for years?
One other hymnal that is an absolute PAIN is the Word Hymnal, The Hymnal for Worship and Celebration. There are maybe fifteen hymns, 30 gospel songs, and the rest were all written post-1970.
I am very happy with what we use at church, Majesty Hymns. Unfortunately it is missing all of Luther's hymns besides "A Mighty Fortress" and "Away in a Manger," but it is a very good collection of hymns and more traditional gospel songs. majestymusic.org
