    Specs requested

I wonder what would you choose for a stop list with a few ranks of pipes with the following ranks.  I would be interesting in know the uppers pitches up to at least 1/1/3'.  I am thinking about a unified and duplexed organ as well as any ideas.  I just find stop lists so intereting when coming from a few ranks of pipes.  These pipe sounds have an appeal to me in any organ so when it comes to a small organ, I am just interested in those of you who professionals  regarding  this matter.

Basic Flute, on both manuals - how many ranks needed here.

Bassoon, Solo on Sw. and extended to Pedal

French Horn, Mellow tone for Sw. Manual

Trumpet, or Oboe for both manuals

Diapason, or Principal for Great Maual, with 16' pitch, or a Flute 16' pitch

Gemshorn, Dulciana, or Viox Celeste for a Sting rank

If upper pitches are used, how many couplers would be needed or useful with the above ranks?

What would good pedal stops be?

It is all educational and a learning experiece.  I had often wondered what I could have in a two maual pipe organ for my home.  I have played on a local church organ that has six ranks.

    Thanks,

    James

    Re: Specs requested

    my 2 cents:

Grab a Tierce from the Salicional, a Larigot from the Gedeckt.

I used them both quite a bit to give some 'flavor' to other stops..........and in combination for my "poorman's mixture" where I'd put on my unit 2 2/3, larigot, tierce and 1' sifflote...a sometimes useful 4 rank "pseudo mixture". :)

    Re: Specs requested

    Well, for my $0.02...

    Wood Flute 16' 97; Diapason 8' 85; Salicional 8' 85, Dulciana 8' 73; and Fagot/Oboe 8' 61

    Great: 8 Diapason, 8 B'dn, 8 Salicional, 8 Unda Maris, 4 Octave, 4 Flute, 2 2/3 Twelfth, 2' Principal, 1 1/3 Larigot, 8' Fagot, Sw/Gt

    Sw: 16 Gedackt, 8' B'dn, 8' Salicional, 8' Celeste, 4' Principal, 4' Flute, 4' Salicet, 2 2/3 Nazard, 2' Piccolo, 1 3/5 Tierce, 8' Fagot, Tremolo, Sw 4

    Ped: 16' Gedackt, 8' Diapason, 8' B'dn, 8' Salicional, 5 1/3 Lieblich Quint, 4' Flute, 4' Salicet, 8' Oboe, Gt/Pd-Sw/Pd.

The Dulciana is tuned -13 cents off of unison, which provides the Celeste/Unda Maris as well as an "almost" pure tuning for the Tierce...  Twelfth is from the Salicional; Lieblich Gedackt/Nazard/Larigot are all from the Unit Flute.

This is sorta the "standard-stock" spec for a lot of Wicks and other "assembly line" builders, but something seems to work pretty well.  At some point in time, on one of the instruments I've relocated/re-assembled (that's a story in itself!), all of the mutations as well as the reed (no reed & no space!) will be done on an Ahlborn Archive Module.

    Regrards...

    Re: Specs requested

KleinErzahler's specification is very nice. A good many practice hours could be spent on that organ.

    A few suggestions (and additions):

-If the space where the organ is placed is a large, open space (and funds are sufficient), consider adding a 16' extension to the Corno d'Amore. It would add oomph to the 16' series and make the pedal more defined in lower octaves.

-Instead of just borrowing mutations from other unison stops, consider adding a single mutation rank of 2-2/3' and 1-1/3'. This rank would be useful in freeing up the unification of the unison ranks, the 2-2/3' would add an interesting solo color to the treble (among endless color possibilities), and the 1-1/3' would impart brilliance to the ensemble and provide a distinguished clarity for counterpoint. Be sure they are each on different manuals to prevent pitch "drop-out".

-For romantic literature, an 8' Celeste for the Gemshorn is advisable. Plus, Celestes are just neat stops.Stick out tongue

-Also, for additional variety and relief, consider adding a 16' extension to the Gemshorn unit. It would provide additional depth and weight for the pedal division and it would work with the 16' Stopped Flute to balance the manual chorus. If space for a full-length 16' octave is not available, consider mitering that stop. Many successful examples of mitering exist, so its definitely worth checking into.

Also, for the sake of funding, consider checking places like organclearinghouse.com and builder's websites. Many nice unit organs like Moller Artistes and Wicks unit series organs can be found there.

Lastly, Wicks is offering numerous unit organs at really great prices. Many of these are nice "ear-ticklers" and contain neat stops such as "Cornopeans", "Claribel Flutes" and "Echo Salicionals". (Stops one would not find in this day and age!) I have visited their factory this summer and heard some of these, they would make great home projects. You can check on their website (http://organ.wicks.com/) and look under "Wicks Special Offers" to find these.
