Two new recordings by the amazing Jelani Eddington are coming out this month. I just pre-ordered 'em today :)
One, "The Mighty Wurlitzer: A Symphonic Celebration", is recorded on the famous oft-recorded Wurlitzer that used to belong to ATOS founder Dick Simonton. The organ, already a very large and customized Wurli, was further enlarged and restored to a 4 manual, 38-rank powerhouse, and installed in a large private Virginia music studio/home (living in a studio with 38 ranks of Wurli... what a concept
). While sniffing 'round the 'net to research writing this lil post, I found this very interesting and detailed website about the whole thing: http://members.cox.net/wurlitzer/
This recording should be a great one! Amongst the selections are: The Galloping Comedians, El Relicario, a Sinatra medley, My Funny Valentine, Over The Rainbow, and Grieg's Piano Concerto in A-Minor.
The other disc, "An Evening At The Tennessee" is recorded on a 3/17 Wurlitzer, still in its original home, the Tennessee Theatre, Knoxville. The instrument has been fully restored, and has received rave reviews from theatre-organ fans and experts. Highlights are: Get Happy, Sweet And Lowdown, All The Things You Are, a Phantom medley, The Light Cavalry Overture, and a Carpenters medley.
Q: How do you make a theatre organ sound like a church organ?
A: Take out all the GOOD stuff!
