I think we might buy a used organ. It seems like a good idea.

Re: New pipe organ for my parish

With your budget being so tight, going with a used instrument might be your best bet. However, you still must be careful that you don't buy a real piecce of junk, you also must be careful to buy something that is neither too large or too small for the space.  In my previous post on this thread I suggested the Organ Clearing House, and Sesquialtera16 actually copied the bulk of his post from OCH. The website for Organ Clearing House is http://www.organclearinghouse.com/instr/index.php. I might suggest hiring a consultant for the project.

All said, buying used is a good idea.

Re: New pipe organ for my parish

Short version of the story:  We purchased a 1973 III/56 Schantz ($75,000) from a church which was constructing a new building with a new organ next door to the old one.  We engaged a respected, experienced, local craftsman as consultant, project manager, and builder.  We spent another $400,000 moving the organ across the country, refurbishing, updating, releathering, reconfiguring, reinstalling (including remodeling the choir loft), revoicing and combining the organ with our existing 1970 Wicks.  The results are beyond our best expectations and we refer to this magnificent instrument as our Schantz III/72.  Our pastor at the time (now the Provincial of the order) said something like:  "I don't know anything about organs; but this one is spectacular!"  We estimate its current replacement value to be at least $2 million.

    Party!!!

Re: New pipe organ for my parish

another thought....keep an eye out for local churches that are closing....there may be a pipe organ in your area that you can actually sit down and play and have evaluated before it goes into your church.

the only thing I can think of that is ultra important:

working with someone local who is knowledgeable about relocaitng pipe organs and knows what they are doing, and has references, that you and the organ committee explore in person to establish that this person really does know what they are talking about.

It is very easy for a hobbyist to walk up and say "i'm a organ tec..I can move it in for 100,000.00....they may take your money, get it moved in somewhat realize they are in over their head and walk away from it...thus I'd look hard at finding a VERY well referenced technician/firm to work with.

research the Indiana University recent organ fiasco where they had to find another firm to finish the mess left by a "trendy boutique organ builder" who walked away without completing the organ, but still got paid for it..

Going with a established firm with a long history, and not a individual would be a priority for me unless you can arrange that it is not paid at least mostly for until AFTER it is completed.

I'd forgotten all about the Rosales thing, I would be interested to know how Rosales managed to not finish his work ad get paid as though he had. That however is matter for PMs or other means of contact, or another thread, but not this one.

Re: New pipe organ for my parish

the organ i have suggested for u in a previous post was selected from among many

a] builder known to make solid instruments

    b] priced at a bargain

c] the builder under new ownership can do all the work of refurb at the plant and any modifications needed and give u a magnificent piece of music equipment that will last 50 years and probably cut you a deal since they are trying to get that firm re-established

d] they can include a new organ warranty if the work is done in-factory and the final voicing in your edifice to assure good tonal results

Re: New pipe organ for my parish

Mr R is the diocesan organ advisor for LA

he has helped an Iowa builder with scaling an organ in the LA RC cathedral

then he did likewise for said man from Iowa in Kimmel Philly

wondering if he will also assist with the new 75-90 rk over 5 mil job at WNC due in 2009

that website says that the heritage of the 1930s skinner will be honored by keeping some old pipes

    what about the a-s?

the new perm organist at WNC is scott dettra

the new gallery organ for WNC will be a mechanical in the French idiom

    question

why would a high anglican place want an entire organ along French lines?

    why mechanical?

how will that contribute to the liturgy?

Re: New pipe organ for my parish

Lively-Fulcher and J.W. Walker come to mind as well.  The local L-F in my area gave the Church very very much bang for the buck.  I don't know if the financial situation favors English builders right now, but J.W. Walker makes fantastic, cohesive-yet-flexible instruments.

    Steve:

I purchased the 4/31 Austin from Roosevelt Jr. High School in Altoona.  It is a wonderful instrument and was in near mint condition.  The school is being torn down Aug 1 this year.  I need to find a home for it.

Good to hearing from you - I hope all is well.

Re: New pipe organ for my parish

    Steve:

Thank-you for the information .I also have the FCC -Ygn Hillgreen Lane et al organ here in the shop that I need to find a home for.I offered the Austin to St Charles (they are considering a 3/33 Schantz for $750,000.00) but they told me that they cannot afford to do anything right now.  I offered the Austin, enlarged to about 45 or so ranks, with facade pipes, for $250,000.00, but they said no.  I guess they would rather have a Schantz at triple the price.

The Austin was completely restored with a Peterson relay and console updates in 1992.  However, I would want to even update it further.  The 5 divisions were Echo, Swell, Great, Choir and Pedal - no solo. Beautiful reeds and strings as well as a color pallet of wood and metal flutes (Rohr, Chiminey, Gross, Ged, Mel, Clara, Harmonic and open)!  Of course, being a 1924 instrument, it lacks mutations and principal choruses.  I can fix that!

    Well, thank-you again!
    v

    TO SCHOENSTEIN ORGANIST:

THIS MAN HAS 2 PIPE ORGANS.i am familar personally with the 3m hillgreen and it is a nice liturgical organ with revisions in 1971.

    also the austin sounds interesting

give the man an email if u wish.
