The Whiteboard tab appears if you have enabled Ink in your profile.  Ink is for use with tablet PC's.  Since I don't own one, I'm honestly not sure at the moment what the benefits of enabling ink are other than being able to use a stylus to enter your text.  Something for me to look into, I guess.

Well, I had to reply just to see what you were telling about. Indeed that also works, but it is a few extra clicks. I mostly open the reply in another tab. Doesn't take much, just right-click and select that option. Maybe IE users aren't used to tabs?

I prefer to scroll down, certainly if the thread is displayed in order of the last reply first. Since mostly you are replying to the last few posts. I certainly prefer that above having extra tabs open, there are already enough of them open already.

Tabs are part of IE 7 which is native to Vista and became available for XP in October 2006.
